It's the Rotary
Club of Orlando's Interscholastic Canstruction ® Competition.
It's a meet because:
» this is a competition with prizes for best sculpture
by a high school
» it's a competition with prizes for best YouTube video of the
school's design and construction project
Mentors will help with the design and construction of each project.
In return the participants will be responsible for collecting the
minimum 1000 cans of edible food used in each sculpture. At
the end of the competition, all of the canned food will be donated
to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida in time for
its annual pre-Thanksgiving distribution to needy local families.
Who Can Participate?
All high schools in the greater Orlando
area are invited to participate.
When Is It?
The Canstruction sculptures are designed and constructed in early
Fall, displayed in mid-October and distributed to Second Harvest
Food Bank of Central Florida in time for Thansgiving.
Where Are the Sculptures Built?
The sculptures are designed and assembled at each participating
high school with the help of a Canstruction mentor. The completed
sculptures are then moved to Orlando Fashion Square for display
and judging.

while the sculptures are on display.

Background
Canstruction was formed in 1992 by the Society of Design Administration as a
friendly competition to provide food for underpriviledged and underserved people.
Since its founding, this event has grown to 140 cities across the United States
and resulted in the donation of over 15 million pounds of canned food. Over the
past 17 years in Orlando, this project has generated 344,000 cans or boxex of
food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.
The Rotary Club of Orlando, founded in 1920, is the oldest and largest Rotary
Club in Central Florida. The club has a mission of support for its local commuunity
by promoting education, youth involvement and programs that alleviate hunger. |
